In Alonso Ruizpalacios directing debut, Gueros shows us a glimpse of life as a student during the 1999 UNAM protests. Two brothers rekindle their bond through their navigation of the purgatory-like environment embodied by political unrest and the nature of being a 20-something year old. Mixed in is a lovely portrayal of Mexico's love for Rock ‘n Roll and Bolero, as well as a not so lovely portrayal of the colorism that is all too common throughout the country. Overall, Gueros is a great look into Mexican culture and the promising future of Mexican film.
