Based on the novel of the same name by Elfriede Jelinek, The Piano Teacher is an unflinching exploration of repressed female sexuality, specifically repressed female masochism. The story follows Erika, a professor of piano in her thirties, who is still living with her overbearing mother. During a private performance, she meets the young Walter, who is instantly drawn and attracted to Erika and her severity. As he continues to pursue her, Erica must decide how far she will go for a lover and if her idea of love is really what she desires.
The Piano Teacher went on to win the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, putting Haneke’s name on the map and helping to cement his status as an auteur. Haneke, however, is not the only auteur involved in this film. Isabelle Huppert delivers a devastating and astounding performance as Erika, worthy of many more accolades than received. She’s a sight to behold and one that will remain in the hours, days, and even weeks to follow after viewing.
