Known more for his emotional and nostalgic family dramas, Yasujiro Ozu directed numerous masterpiece films throughout his long and decorated career. From Tokyo Story (1953) to An Autumn Afternoon (1962). Good Morning (1959), while often overshadowed by Ozu’s more serious and regularly tragic films, is a truly precious gem that earns its place in Yasujiro Ozu’s glittering collection of films.

Good Morning, marches in step with Ozu’s signature storytelling and cinematic conventions; focusing in on a small community, from his characteristic low-angle camera and rich color palette. Where it deviates from Ozu’s norms, however, cement it as a film worth its own merit. Using the somewhat absurd humor of everyday interactions, Good Morning explores the value of social pleasantries, matching sweaters, and the silent treatment to utterly delightful ends. For the analytical viewer, this film provides an additionally interesting perspective. It highlights the development and shifting norms of sub-urban post-war Japan in subtly insightful ways. But whether you seek critical viewing or simple cinematic pleasure, Good Morning is a film worth catching on the big screen. So take your mind off week nine woes for an hour or so, and join us for this delightful little fim.
