A historic film for Iranian New Wave Cinema on many fronts, lauded filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami’s debut feature is a wonderfully bleak entrance point for Kiarostami lovers and newcomers alike. A toxic love story between a young boy and the beautiful game, The Traveler is an unfortunately prophetic reflection on exploitation and greed akin to circumstances seen presently in football stadiums near and far; one which weaponizes passion and collectivity for the pleasure of few, more privileged members of society. Ultimately, The Traveler works as an early exercise by which Kiarostami examines the malleability of cinematic storytelling, and the treatment of children within society, two prominent themes that succeed in major works of his career.
