Set on the east coast of New Zealand in 1984, 11-year-old Boy lives on a farm with his younger brother Rocky, their gran, and a goat. Boy adores Michael Jackson and his absent father Alamein, who are both often subjects of Boy’s childlike fantasies. Shortly after his Gran leaves for a week, Boy's criminal father Alamein appears out of the blue to find a bag of money he buried long ago. Having imagined a heroic version of his father during his absence, Boy has to deal with getting to know the truth about who his father really is.
